Construction of School Using Eco Bricks

Existing School Structure

We are supporting the construction of a complete new school;

  • 1×3 classroom block
  • 20,000L rainwater harvesting tank
  • Drainable latrines for boys, girls (with a washroom) and teachers

All built using eco-friendly ISSB
(interlocking stabilised soil blocks), with local youths (men and women) trained.

Also hundreds of new trees planted on-site, to provide food and shade.

This project will directly benefit 393 currently enrolled primary school pupils (212 girls, 181 boys) and support the work of 6 teachers (1 female, 5 male), as well as thousands more in the years to come.

School was founded by the community in 2005 and currently has one temporary, roofed mud-structure classroom, while other classes take place in the nearby church building or under trees.

Currently, two latrines are shared with the neighbouring church, and the school has one 5,000 litre rainwater harvesting tank and an unprotected well for water. There are no desks and very few books.

The District Education Office highlighted the need at this school, which was then verified during visits by our partners Country Manager.

Long Term Resilience

The project benefits will be sustained through active involvement of school staff and the local community in the tank’s installation, maintenance, and water management.

By providing water storage practices into daily routines, the school will maintain reliable access to water well beyond the grant period.

Social Impact

Provision of a new three-room classroom block with furniture will enable the school to meet its capacity requirements, support pupils to thrive and attract trained teachers.

A 20,000 litre water tank will be
incorporated, to make use of the large surface area of the new classroom block roof and provide a safe
source of water on school grounds.

A block of five stances of drainable latrines for boys, five stances for girls and two stances for staff will be builtSSB . The girls’ latrine block will include a washroom, to provide privacy for girls to wash and
change during menstruation. All structures will be disability accessible.

Being a refugee-hosting community, the new structures will support the education of not just local children, but those traveling across the porous borders from less stable neighbouring countries;
promoting peace and support for vulnerable families.

Economic Impact

With qualified and experienced local contractors and oversight provided via the Country Manager, who is a qualified engineer.

Local young people who have been trained to
build with ISSB will give the local community a new skill, making them employable in eco-friendly techniques, and ensuring the community can maintain their new structures

Environmental Impact

Construction will be using ISSB (interlocking stabilised soil blocks), which are environmentally friendly.

The blocks are made from local soil, compressed, and then cured, rather than fired, which eliminates the need for firewood and charcoal.

Less cement is also needed to make and use the bricks, which is better for the environment and reduces building costs.
